In today’s society, especially with the current pandemic, we are seeing an increase in drinking within the media. From drinks being shared with friends out at a bar to encouraging drinking at home to unwind, we are constantly exposed to alcohol consumption. One pairing we are consistently seeing is women and wine. Women are constantly being bombarded with images of an individual with a wine glass. But how does that harm someone recovering from alcohol addiction? And if you’re being influenced by these images, how do you get help?

Society and the Happy Hour

Happy hours have always been a highlight of our society. Happy hours are typically spent at a bar or restaurant where individuals can enjoy drinks and food at lower prices than normal. With the current pandemic taking place, outlets are encouraging virtual happy hours instead, where friends and coworkers hope online at the same time to enjoy a few drinks around the screen. While this may seem harmless, it can have detrimental effects on those in recovery. Seeing this type of alcohol consumption everywhere they turn increases the amount of women and wine consumption occurring.

In fact, many articles are encouraging this type of activity as a way to keep employees connected during a difficult time. However, this alienates those struggling with alcohol addiction or recovery, and puts them at risk for relapse. The current pandemic is already placing a strain on people’s recovery, and seeing an increase in alcohol consumption is only encouraging them to take a drink even more.

If you’re in recovery and feel the urge or pressure to drink again, reach out to an alumni program or network to receive the helpful support you need.

Women and Wine: Mommy Wine Culture

When it comes to women and wine, a new phenomenon is taking our society by storm. Mommy wine culture is gaining momentum all over social media and other aspects of consumerism. From shirts that encourage moms drinking, to numerous blogs, youtube videos, and other outlets showing moms reaching for a glass of wine, mommy wine culture is encouraging women to use drinking as a way to deal with their families.

Not only is this dangerous to the women consuming the wine, but it’s also harmful to the rest of the family. Drinking a glass of wine to relax from the stresses of motherhood can easily lead to alcohol dependence and alcoholism.

Children seeing their mothers consume alcohol as a way to relax can also make them experience feelings of guilt, shame, and resentment. When this takes place, family therapy might be required to bridge the gaps and hurt feelings in relationships.
